" PILLARS OF POWER". OCCUPY St. Pauls : A PAINTING (completed October 2014)

From October 2011 to February 2012 activists occupied St Pauls Cathedral,London, in conjunction with other Occupations worldwide. We went several times to attend the Quaker Meetings held in support on the steps of the Cathedral. This painting is in memory of that event and contains the image of many who were there, ie Bruce Kent of CND. The image is not the same as appearance, though they are connected. Jessy always complains that "she never looks like that" !

This art is naive with a constantly shifting perspective. You have to enter the painting and move around inside it to FEEL its appearance. So the "pillars of power" seem large and oppressive but also small and insignificant because they are both depending on viewpoint. Those who know Iconography and Mughul Art will see their influence. Im not sure if the real "pillars of power" are the people or the buildings.Thats the battle, I suppose.

The babygrow-stuffed Guy Fawkes ( "V" for Vendetta mask) effigy of the occupy Movement is diametrically opposed to the anaemic white-stone Queen effigy of the Establishment, as the colourful people contrast with the lifeless white cut-stone buildings.

"Live adventurously" is from the Quaker Red Book, Queries and Advice, no 27.
That, and other placards existed on the days we visited.
The giant Monopoly board was donated by the street artist Banksy.
The tableau enactment of " Jesus evicting moneylenders" did happen and is painted here in the style of its tradition since Occupy St Pauls belongs to it and was the more powerful because of that association.
